The Bizarre Disappearance of Herman Caldwell Jr.

Herman Caldwell Jr.

32-year-old Herman J Caldwell Jr was last seen on March 3rd 1982 in Columbia, South Carolina. That day, he withdrew $500 and left his parent’s home despite pleas from his father to stay. Police believe Herman drove his 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix to Charleston, SC, to meet with someone to give them money. Neither Herman nor his car have ever been seen again.

In 1978, 4 years before his disappearance, Herman was attacked and mugged by 3 men near his home. Herman then went on to identify one of his attackers, Leroy Nolan, to the police. Nolan served a short sentence for the attack and was released in 1982, the same year Herman disappeared.

Shortly before vanishing, Herman told his parents that Leroy Nolan was threatening him. His parents offered to let him stay with them, but he declined. It is unclear whether the $500 he withdrew that day was to give to Leroy Nolan to leave him alone.

Leroy Nolan’s criminal career finally caught up to him in 2004 when he was arrested in conjunction with two others for murder and kidnapping. It is alleged that Nolan and two others kidnapped and murdered Patricia Gilmore and her two-year-old son, Michael in 1978. Bizarrely, the crime is also alleged to have taken place on the same day Herman Caldwell was attacked.

Information about either case is sparse and Leroy Nolan passed away in 2010. Whatever secrets he had went with him to the grave and investigators never gained any critical information from Leroy about Herman’s disappearance. Despite the time that has passed, investigators are hopeful that Herman’s case can be solved.

Herman is described as a Black male with black hair, brown eyes, 5’5” to 5’8” and 150 lbs. He has a half-inch scar on the right side of his neck and was last seen wearing a blue flowered shirt, black pants, black shoes and a hat. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Richland County Sheriff’s Office at 803-576-3462 quoting case number 0604816512.
